Cosmetics registration increases phototoxicity, sensitization and SPF tests

On September 3, 2019, National Medical Products Administration -NMPA issued announcement No. 72, requiring additional tests on some cosmetics containing sunscreen from September 10, that is, all “ordinary” or “non special purpose” cosmetics containing ≥ 0.5% (weight) chemical sunscreen must be tested for skin phototoxicity, sensitization and sun protection factor (SPF). Previously, only products that claimed to have such features required SPF testing. All newly registered or filed cosmetics need to be tested before they can be put on the market. When the license is renewed every four years, supplementary test report shall also be submitted.
